The 34 Spring Challenge

The 34 Challenge! Celebrating the 34th year of twinning between Sheffield and Estelí.

Background

The Sheffield Estelí Society (SES) is a group that makes connections between Sheffield and Estelí, a city in northern Nicaragua. Sheffield has been twinned with Estelí since 1987. We fundraise for local initiatives including music, English language teaching and theatre projects. We host community activists from Esteli and organize delegations to our twin city when possible.

We raise money through local events and activities, including the annual Two Peaks bike ride which raises approximately £1000 each year. Due to Covid we have had to cancel the ride two years running.

Estelí is a vibrant city that produces rum, coffee and tobacco. Estelí and the surrounding countryside was one of the regions of Nicaragua to suffer the most violence during the revolution of the late 1970s and afterwards in the long and bitter USA backed contra war of the 1980s. Daniel Ortega was a guerrilla leader heading up the revolutionary ruling council from 1979 and was elected president in 1984. He lost the election in 1990 but returned to power in 2006 and through making constitutional changes has remained in power ever since. Since 2018 there has been serious political unrest with the violent and armed response from the government. Over 300 people have been killed, thousands injured and many hundreds imprisoned. At least 100,000 people have been forced into political exile.

The Challenge

This year, to celebrate the 34th year of twinning between Sheffield and Estelí we present 'The 34 Spring Challenge'.

The challenge consists of you doing something 34 times during the dates of the event, which are Saturday 20th March-22nd April.

This can be anything! Walk, run, swim or even bike 34 miles in a day or over a period of time.

Not the sporty type? Why not cross 34 books off your reading list,  try baking 34 cakes, or even take 34 photos of spring.

The decision is entirely up to you!

This challenge is open to anyone, so why not do it together with a friend or family member.

The goal is to achieve the distance between Sheffield and Esteli, which is 5282 miles between us. Therefore, for every mile that you run or every time you do your specific task, it will contribute towards that goal.

How to take part

To take part, simply decide exactly what you want to do 34 times and donate to this fundraiser.  Please keep us updated on the progress of your challenge by either posting pictures on our Facebook event page or by taking part in our event on Eventbrite (links are down below). By keeping us updated, we will be able to track our target goal of 5282 miles.

By taking part in this challenge and donating, you will be contributing towards a wide range of projects such as education, music and healthcare that will benefit the people of Estelí.

If you do not want to take part in the challenge but still want to contribute, you can still donate to the fundraiser.
