Expanding compassion: U.S. to Thailand

As a child to Vietnamese refugee parents, I understand the importance of fostering international compassion. My parents fled to the U.S. to escape persecution and now work tirelessly to make ends meet. As a first-generation American, I have experienced international compassion through immigration caseworkers, vietnamese-speaking healthcare providers, and culturally conscious educators/counselors.
Despite the barriers I faced as a low-income first-generation college student at San Diego State University, I have administrated emergency response aid for refugees in a Ugandan refugee settlement, conducted citizenship casework as an Immigration Intern for the International Rescue Committee, & advocated for sustainable development policies as a Co-Chair for the United Nations Association, USA-SD .
After a national competition through Princeton in Asia (PiA), I was recently awarded an opportunity to teach English at a private university in Thailand (from May 2019 to March 2020). PiA aims to promote compassion and understanding between the U.S. & Asia. Through working with the Thai community, I hope to better understand how my identity as an Asian-American woman fits into our collective humanity, how Asia fits into our international community, and how my career in human rights fits into our global progression.
My biggest barrier for completing this fellowship is the out-of-pocket expenses. With your help, the funds I raise on this platform will go towards
1) my visa;
2) a round-trip flight to Thailand; and
3) two round-trip flights to Princeton University (for Teaching English as a Foreign Language training and orientation).
