Teddy McCarthy Memorial Fund

Following the recent passing of Sarsfields, Glanmire & Cork Legend Teddy McCarthy in June this year, Sarsfields Hurling Club are now setting up a Teddy McCarthy Memorial Fund with the primary goal to commission a statue in his honour at the entrance to the Sarsfields pitch at Riverstown Glanmire. The statue will depict the iconic catch v Wexford in the 1993 National League final as seen above.

Sarsfields Hurling Club have commissioned well known Irish sculptor Seamus Connolly to carry out the work. At the base of the statue we also intend to honour Teddy’s unique achievement of being the only player to win an All-Ireland Hurling & Football Senior medal in the one year 1990. A bronze McCarthy cup and a bronze Sam Maguire cup will be placed in the base of the statue. This project has the full support of the McCarthy family, the Sarsfields and Glanmire clubs and I’m sure the wider GAA community.

Teddy won Four All-Ireland Senior medals, 10 Munster Championships, 2 National League medals, 3 Under 21 Football medals, 2 senior County football titles with Imokily, an Intermediate Football Title with Glanmire and two Harty cup medals with the North Monastery college. Teddy won an All Star and was also footballer of the year in 1989. Teddy was a selector with Sarsfields senior team in 2008 when Sarsfields won their first senior hurling title for 51 years. Teddy also represented his country in the compromise rules series in Australia in 1986.

On the 9th of December next, a tribute to Teddy Night will take place at Pairc Ui Chaoimh with the Cork Senior Football Team playing Meath and the Cork Senior Hurling Team playing Galway a repeat of the double year 1990. We at Sarsfields are asking all to support this event in recognition of Teddy’s unique achievement.
