Scarlett Rose Kathleen Milko is 17 months old. She’s a ray of sunshine, silly, smiley has the most contagious little laugh and sweetest little voice. She is crazy about Elmo, Baby Shark and playing with her 6 year old brother Conner, who is always proud to introduce her to anyone he meets. Her Mom and Dad are so overjoyed and blessed to have the baby girl they always hoped for. On November 2, 2020 Scarlett’s Mom (Leisha Broydell) and Dad (Harris Milko) were at a pediatrician appointment with Scarlett where she was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. Parent or not anyone could agree this is a parents absolute nightmare come true.
In this rare disease, a solid tumor (a lump or mass caused by uncontrolled or abnormal cell growth) is formed by special nerve cells called neuroblasts. Normally, these immature cells grow into functioning nerve cells. But in neuroblastoma, they become cancer cells instead.
Scarlett’s pediatrician promptly sent this frightened little family to CHEO Hospital in Ottawa to undergo urgent testing. Scarlett underwent numerous tests, procedures, biopsies as a brave baby could in the arms of her Mom and Dad. What we know so far is that in Scarlett’s case her abdominal tumor is too large to operate on. She will begin undergoing chemotherapy in an effort to shrink the tumor making it small enough to safely remove.
She will continue her treatment at Kingston General Hospital (KGH). Scarlett will begin attending appointments at KGH on Thursday November 18, 2020 having her port put in, to begin chemo within the next 2 weeks.
This VERY special family has a very long emotionally and physically gruelling road ahead of them! Please find it in your heart to contribute. Harris is off from work at this time to be with his daughter and his wife, and as a single income family this will definitely increase financial stress. If we can at the very least alleviate some of their financial burdens it would be a real blessing at their time of need.
#TeamScarlettRose will keep you updated as she progresses through her treatment!
Love to ALL!! xo
