Team Nacky - Tuition Fund

Beschermde donatie
We are organizing this tuition drive on behalf of our esteemed colleague, dear friend, and asset to our Očhéti Šakówiŋ, Ms. Nacole Walker.

She is currently a graduate student at the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND (M.Ed in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment) and is pursing a Postbaccalaureate Certificate at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN (Advanced Practices in Second Language Teaching).

Unfortunately, she is unable to pay for her tuition this summer and this coming fall. After this summer, she will be only 2.00 credits away from earning her Master of Education (M.Ed) at the University of Mary and has just completed her first 6.00 credits of the 12.00 credit postbaccalaureate certificate program at the University of Minnesota.

She had been depending on getting graduate funding from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe but found out she was no longer eligible. She then tried to receive federal student loans, but being considered less than "part-time" or "half-time" at each respective university she was ineligible. She had not planned for these setbacks and had not applied for scholarships prior to the summer term (many scholarships do not cover part-time graduate students)

Current Amounts owed:
University of Mary: $2,720.00
University of Minnesota: $4,396.00
Upcoming University of Mary Tuition, books, and Fees: $2,720.00
Goal: $10,000.00

Below are members of our team sharing about Nacole:

"Nacole has been foundational to the recent D/Lakota language restoration movement at Standing Rock because she has applied her love for D/Lakota language learning and linguistics to her coursework in education and language acquisition. If our goal is to teach more people L/Dakota then we need more people who know the language AND know how to teach it effectively. Nacole has already been able to use the skills she’s learned in her Master’s and certificate programs to improve L/Dakota education. At Sitting Bull College, for example, she has led the D/Lakota Summer Institute team in improving existing language courses and developing new ones. Nacole has also been using her new educational skills to develop assessments and evaluations of these courses and other D/Lakota related programs –something our communities have never used until now. Helping Nacole earn her degrees is directly helping the language movement at Standing Rock and elsewhere. Please Donate." - Tasha Hauff

"Many of us are lucky to know Nacole personally as a remarkable friend, colleague, mentor, and teacher. She is known for her hard work and dedication to high quality education, and especially for her leadership in Standing Rock’s Dakota/Lakota language revitalization initiatives. As a teacher, Nacole has encouraged a new generation of D/Lakota language learners through her innovative and engaging instructional methods and her energetic style of teaching. Nacole’s ability to connect with her students and her capability to teach at various levels has made her an invaluable resource for many programs across Očhéthi Šakówiŋ communities. Nacole continuously strives to improve her teaching skills and develop herself professionally, and among other things, has done so by taking courses at UMN and U of Mary. Unfortunately, this year there is little to no opportunity for scholarship funding across the reservation. As her education is a direct benefit to creating new leaders and the health and well-being of future generations on Standing Rock, we ask you to consider donating $5, $10, $25, $40 or $100 to support Nacole’s tuition fund." - Yuliya Manyakina

"I have know Nacole for many years as a friend and mentor. As a person, she is a very goal driven person. Her love for her people, language and culture serve as the foundation of her career. Nacole is one of the most intelligent, hardworking and humble people I know in the Lakota language revitalization movement.

As a teacher, learner and trailblazer in the movement she has stepped up and taken on many of the duties that are urgent such as; grant writing, training teachers and adult learners in language pedagogy, assessment building as well as networking.

Efforts to revitalize the Lakota language have been strong in the past 5 years with many adults taking on learning how to speak for the first time in their lives. Each year there are teenagers, young adults and people from older generations who
progress in the language. There is a constant need for undated classes, assessment and best practice pedagogy Nacole Walker often takes this responsibility on and is therefor essential to the education of those of us who choose to learn and teach. Without her many of us, as teachers and learners, would not be at the various levels we have attained presently.

I would like to urge everyone who has ever cared about the health and revival of our Lakota language to invest in Nacole Walker. You’re investmeint will help her through school to attain the education she needs to continue the creators work. Your investment is not just an investment in Nacole but an investment in the Lakota language and people." - Dusty Lee Nelson

"Nacole is my little sister. She’s one of the most responsible and smartest people I’ve ever known. She helps with our language in so many ways. She has spent this entire summer teaching and taking classes. Her devotion to our language is what is fueling the fire of our efforts. She believes in it full heartedly. If you could please take the time to support her through monetary donations you will be contributing to the future of our language. My daughters are her daughters and they are her biggest fans. We love her ❤️ - Shauna Elk
