Walking in Their Shoes for the Bates Foundation

Heroes don’t always wear capes, sometimes, they simply care enough to act.

By donating to The Bates Foundation, you become part of a ripple of change reaching children and communities who need it most.

Every pound, every dirham, every act of generosity makes you part of their story.

The harsh reality:

263 million children globally are out of school — many not by choice, but because of poverty, war, or systemic neglect.

In the slums we work in, families often survive on less than £1 a day — with limited access to food, clean water, or education.

Some children go days without eating, others walk miles barefoot for the chance to sit in a classroom.

At sunset, education ends. There’s no electricity, no Wi-Fi, no second chances.

These are not statistics in a report — they’re real kids, facing real battles before they’ve even had a chance to dream.

But here’s what your support through TBF makes possible:

4000+ children mentored every week across 6 countries through character-based education that builds confidence, resilience, and leadership — skills that break cycles.

Daily food programmes ensure children have at least one nutritious meal — keeping them in school, alert, and able to thrive.

In Kenya alone, 2,500+ children now attend academies — from Nairobi’s largest slums to orphanages in Nakuru.

TBF programmes provide access to education, safe spaces, and mentors who care deeply.

‍ Local instructors are trained and employed — creating a ripple of opportunity beyond just the children.

By 2025, we aim to impact 10,000+ children across 10+ countries — and we can’t do it without you.

The Challenge:

Inspired by the strength of the kids and communities I met in Kenya earlier this year, I’ll be living as they do (for one week) to raise awareness and funds for The Bates Foundation

Here’s what that looks like:

  • 10K barefoot steps carrying a weighted backpack: To represent the children who walk long distances to school, often barefoot, carrying water or supplies.

  • ️ One basic meal of porridge a day: Many kids get just one meal…if they’re lucky. Some go without.

  • Sleeping on the floor, without a mattress:
A reminder that many slum children don’t have a home, let alone a bed.

  • Only 5L of water per day: For drinking, washing, and cooking…because water is a daily struggle, not a guarantee.

  • No electricity after sunset: Like families living in the slums, where night means darkness.

  • Wearing the same clothes every day:
To mirror those who own only one outfit.

I’ll be doing all of the above every day from Saturday 11th to Friday 17th October.

It’s a way to walk in their shoes, raise awareness, and show solidarity through action… not just words. Will you join me in changing lives?
