Hi everyone,

My name is Abby Nelson, and I'm reaching out with a heavy heart on behalf of my brother Zach and Katie's beloved dog, Rosie, who has recently been diagnosed with Caudal Occipital Malformation Syndrome (COMS)—a serious neurological condition that affects the skull and spinal cord, causing pain, coordination issues, and a host of other debilitating symptoms.

Rosie is more than just a pet—she is family. Rosie has brought endless joy, comfort, and unconditional love into our lives. Seeing her struggle with this painful condition has been heartbreaking. COMS causes the skull to be too small for the brain, leading to compression and disruption of the flow of spinal fluid. This can result in severe headaches, balance problems, neck pain, and even partial paralysis if left untreated. Currently, they are having to watch her go through so much pain and keeping her in a kennel to limit movement, which is very hard considering she is still just a puppy.

After several vet visits, neurological consultations, and an MRI, the diagnosis was confirmed. The treatment options range from lifelong medication and physical therapy to possible surgery, depending on how the condition progresses. As you can imagine, the medical costs are overwhelming, and they are doing everything they can to give Rosie the best quality of life.

Surgical treatment

Physical therapy and rehabilitation

All of it is estimated to be between $10,000-$15,000. They recently had to put their other dog, Mason, down who had his own share of medical problems and expenses. They are great pet owners and just keep having problems that are out of their control and very expensive. As you can imagine, it gets very expensive. They are choosing to go through with the surgery hoping it will bring relief to Rosie and she can continue to live a great life.
