I am running the Tokyo Marathon on March 2nd for MadreBonita Charity with a goal of 1,000 GBP. Madre Bonita is a community charity in Japan that provides postpartum care for all families. MadreBonita recognizes that in Japan, there is extensive public care for pregnant women, but the care for the mother's body and mind after childbirth has taken a backseat.
Since 1988 Madre Bonita has been developing a health care program specializing in the postpartum period to support families who have welcomed a child so that they can lead healthy lives, both physically and mentally.
I was one of only 30 people selected to have the honor to run and raise money for MadreBonita. I chose this particular charity because what they stand for hits close to home. My mother had a nervous breakdown when I was only 4 months old which resulted in her being diagnosed with schizophrenia. I can't help but feel that if she had had better access to postpartum care and resources, that perhaps she could have been better supported through this difficult time. Too often topics like this, like women's mental health after pregnancy, are considered taboo, especially in the U.S. where most women only receive 12 weeks maternity leave. Choosing to run the Tokyo Marathon and raise money for MadreBonita was a no brainer for me. Despite not having children myself, I can still recognize the need for this type of community care and the valuable resources they can provide to women to get the postpartum support they need, and so hopefully they don't end up like my mom.
Help me reach my goal of 1,000 GBP for MadreBonita and watch me cross the finish line at the Tokyo Marathon on March 2nd! Do it for all the mother's in your lives, because we all have one, and don't we want the best for them?
