Tara & Zayne Need a Home

Tara's Story...

"I’ve been living on the streets with my 4-year-old son, Zayne for months. We now have a chance to live in a low-rent apartment in Oakland... if we can raise the money.

I was laid off from my job at Walmart a few months ago. My partner was furious and kicked me and my son out of his apartment. We had no choice but to live in parks and on the streets. Robbed, beaten, and ignored by pedestrians, I feel degraded and depressed. Worse, I’m no match for anyone who wants to take advantage of me. Zayne has ADHD and desperately needs medication.

Recently I decided to stand up to my partner and convinced him to allow us to move back in. But he immediately disappeared, leaving me with two months of back rent. If I don’t pay that rent, plus December’s rent, I’ll be thrown out on Dec. 15th.

Mostly, I want to give my son a home. I’m looking for a seasonal job and hope to be a dental assistant one day. If I can get back on my feet, I know I can become self-sufficient. We are good, kind people and we’re so grateful for any help at all. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts…"

Sue's Story: (campaign initiator)

In early October I met Tara and Zayne in Union Square. It was clear to me Tara was just the victim of a bad situation. I sat and learned her story, watching as streams of passersby pretended not to see her and Zayne. I continued to visit them and helped with food, clothing, and money. I ultimately offered to have them stay with me, but Tara declined.

One night they were due to come to my apartment for dinner, but Tara was robbed on the MUNI T-line and badly beaten with a metal pole. She and Zayne spent the night at SF General and I learned what happened in the morning.

No one should be on the streets and certainly not a mother and child. I can’t support Tara and Zayne alone, but I know with the help of others, we can turn their situation around. Anything you can contribute towards their rent would enable Tara to concentrate on finding a job and becoming self-sufficient. Thank you, thank you, for yiur our kindness and support!

xoxo,
Sue
