Hello, my name is Gemma. I am currently a second-year paediatric student nurse at Winchester university. I plan on doing my 4-week elective placement in June 2023 abroad in a country that suffers from extreme poverty and severe malnutrition. My preferred country is Tanzania; awaiting approval from the university before I can confirm this, and I will keep you all updated. My time whilst I'm out there will be spent in local hospitals and communities where I will witness:

- A more significant number of malnourished children than you'd see in the UK

-High numbers of children with severe burns

-Overcrowded paediatric wards with limited staff numbers

-Increased instances of neonatal sepsis

-Families are required to supply children's equipment like saline and bandages

This opportunity will give me a different perception of healthcare other than the NHS. Allowing me to build my confidence and step out of my comfort zone. Giving me valuable experience will help make my future career and allow me to meet other individuals studying the same subject and gain knowledge and experience from them, ultimately gaining life-long memories and friends. Each week I will take part in language lessons to ensure I can communicate effectively.

The funds I raise will help me pay for the expenses to enable me to volunteer and help others. I am taking part in this journey to try and make a slight difference in children's lives while I am on the other side of the world for four weeks. I appreciate your kindness and for helping me to help others. I will be organising my travel through Work the World. The rough prices for this are £2340, including accommodation, transport, security and catering. On top of this, I will need to purchase flights, travel insurance, visas and vaccinations and spending money whilst I am out there.
