AFYA YA AKILI is Swahili for mental health.
My name is Pella and I am a student at Stockholm University. During three months I am doing my psychology internship at SIHA ANGAVU mental health & rehabilitation center in Arusha, Tanzania (through Medi Trip Volunteers).
Right now, Tanzania is making psychological breakthroughs (that us Westerners might take for granted), e.g. increased knowledge about developmental conditions such as ADHD and autism. However, the stigma surrounding mental illness is still very present. Usually, clients do not seek psychological help until their situation is unbearable. This must change – knowledge about mental illness and access to psychiatric/psychological care should be available for everyone. In addition, more psychological research is needed.
WE NEED YOUR HELP to reduce stigma and increase awareness of mental health, as well as contribute to psychological research and make mental health care accessible to everyone in (and outside) Tanzania. Donations are used for life-saving medications, education about mental illness, psychological assessments and campaigns aimed at increasing awareness of mental health (among other things - the list goes on...).
Through the 195£ we during my time here (1 month) so far have raised, we have already been able to:
- Purchase a printer for the clinic, which facilitates access to screening and psychometric tests used for psychological assessments and data collection.
- Purchase antipsychotic and antidepressant medications which are vital for many of our patients.
- Participate in a medical event held over a week in conjunction with International Women's Day, where we offered free therapy sessions/mental health advice in a pop-up clinic and did outreach work/spread awareness about mental health.
Every donation (small or large) counts! <3
