Urgent Need for Water Aid

Still recovering after near-total destruction of homes, buildings and crops from cyclone Pam last year, help for a water tank has been requested by a village living near the volcano on Tanna, Vanuatu (an Archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean).  Since April 2016, they have sought help to get a water tank so women in the Issac Wan John From village do not have to walk multiple ¼ to ½ mile roundtrips for water while carrying 20 liter containers along with their babies on their backs! Even young children are needed to carry the daily heavy loads of water.

I learned of the request and the need from a friend, John From, whom the Headmaster of a school in Tanna contacted for help. The John From organization, which has helped Tanna in the past, is currently without funds. Wanting to help, and certain that we could raise the $3520 needed to purchase, ship, and install a 10,000L water tank, I am reaching out to friends and family and friends of friends for donations.

Together, we can help without any one of us having to carry the full load.

Once we get a tank shipped to Port Vila (Tanna's capital), the islanders have arranged for help to get it over the mountains and down into their village near the volcano.

I want to share the elder's email with you. (Spelling and grammar are his):

"The women in Issac's village are absolutely facing water problems. I felt sorry for them when visiting those places. They have to walk 200 plus metres every morning and evening and when necessary to do their laundry, fetch the water for drinking and cooking and other house duties. While our culture differs from the west as to put this way that women are subject to do all the kitchen and children care work. Ladies in this village face the worst as some others that I would like if the fund could also help them. Water tanks are a useful alternatives to 5 literes containers as they can hold sustainable water for a period of time. You will find in this village young children carrying heavy loads and ladies with 20 litres of water containers and babies fasten onto their backs. For these reasons I am happy to be part of this assistance and would offer to vounteer in seeing to the funds, and the delivery to the intended places and making the reports with pictures to you."

The tank will be placed on a flat sand-based pad walled- in square. The villagers have someone who can do that job. 

Funding raised over the required amount for one tank will be put towards acquiring another water tank for other villages in need.
