Tamales For Teachers

Donation protected

In order to support striking Denver educators and their fight for quality public education, the Denver branch of the International Socialist Organization will be serving homemade tamales (and more) on the picket line! We are partnering in this effort with Front Range Workers’ Initiative for Liberation and Defense and the Denver chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America. Tamales will be provided by El Molino Bakery, a local mom & pop business that is owned by former undocumented immigrants.

We have been coordinating this campaign with the Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA) and Colorado Educators Association (CEA) to ensure we provide the best possible support to the strike. Any remaining funds not used to feed striking teachers will be donated to the DCTA Strike Fund.

Though the strike has been delayed, we still expect it to happen and we are still advancing our plans to support it.  Stay tuned to this page for updates. We plan to feed striking teachers on the first day and as often as possible for the duration of the strike. A well-fed picket line is a strong picket line!

The teachers’ key demand is for better compensation in the form of higher base salaries paid on a reliable schedule, instead of the current, complex system of incentives. The district proposal and union demands are about $8 million apart.

A note to all supporters: Funds will be collected by Carlos Valdez, a member of the Denver branch of the International Socialist Organization, a high school history teacher in Aurora, and a member of the Aurora Education Association teachers’ union. Funds will be paid out directly to our tamal provider partner, El Molino Bakery, a local mom & pop business that is owned by former undocumented immigrants and has served the Denver area for nearly two decades. Any remaining funds will be donated to the DCTA Strike Fund .
