Help Rebuild the Taitano Family Home — A Piece of Guam’s Living History

In the early hours of Tuesday, June 24, 2025, a devastating fire tore through the Taitano family home in Sinajana, Guam. What was lost wasn’t just a building—it was a living piece of Guam’s history. This two-story concrete home had stood for generations, once housing the island’s last village post office, run by my grandmother, Isabel S.Q. Taitano, from the side of her home.

For decades, this home was more than shelter. It was a community hub where neighbors came for mail, shared stories, laughter, and warmth. After the post office closed in 2000 so Grandma Isabel could care for her husband, Jesus, the house remained full of life and love—home to multiple generations of our family.

That life changed in an instant.

Around 2:30 a.m., my stepmom Irene awoke and discovered flames engulfing the dining room. Acting quickly, she alerted everyone inside: my dad (Ben Mike), Aunty Odilia, and my two young nieces, Cambria (Cami) and Isabella (Izzy). In those chaotic moments, everyone rushed to escape. But the fire spread rapidly, thick black smoke making it nearly impossible to breathe or see.

In a heart-stopping moment, Cami and Izzy ran back inside—one trying to grab something, the other trying to save the dogs. Irene ran after them. They were soon trapped on the upstairs balcony, with the fire closing in fast.

Phones were left inside. With no way to call 911, my dad jumped into his car and raced to the nearby fire station. Meanwhile, Aunty La flagged down a neighbor driving by. He rushed to grab a ladder and hoisted it to the balcony—just in time to save Irene, Cami, and Izzy. Moments after their feet hit the ground, the kitchen extension collapsed behind them. They escaped death by seconds.

Miraculously, everyone survived. But the trauma of that night remains—and so does the heartbreak. The family lost everything, including six beloved dogs, two of whom were support animals. Their absence is a pain we carry daily.

My parents Benjamin (Mike) and Irene Taitano, Aunt Odilia, and my two nieces Cambria (Cami) and Isabella (Izzy) lived in the home and are now displaced. While the outer concrete frame still stands, everything inside—decades of memories, possessions, family treasures—is gone.

We are now raising $75,000 to help our family recover and rebuild—not just a home, but a legacy. These funds will go toward temporary housing, essential needs, and restoring our family home.
