We instinctively trust our mind because it holds our most profound internal memories from the cradle to the grave. How is it that we can trust our minds to be the holder of all good memories and trust that one day, unknowingly, it won’t lock us out from those memories? The uninvited torture that would come from this would be excruciating. The experience of knowing and doing things as you once did and then suddenly one day not being able to recollect them would be life-changing for anyone.
On Thursday, June 16th, 2022, Victor Dimas woke up and figured this day would be like any other unpromised day. He’d get dressed, go to the grocery store, and come home to his 5 children as he’d always done. However, the route he took to the store would not be the route he took back home. Instead, he awoke in a hospital bed, unable to remember where he was 30 minutes prior. The doctor explained to Victor and his family that he had fallen victim to a high-grade glioma in his left frontal lobe that required an immediate high-risk craniotomy. For his family, it was hard to comprehend the diagnosis, as it seems unrealistic for a tumor of this caliber to attack a devoted, hard-working father of 5, who had built an entire home for his family with his own two hands. The truth was that tumors do not discriminate against who you are, what you’ve done, or what you have to show for it. For Victor, however, it was hard to comprehend the diagnosis, as the tumor inhibited his comprehension. After a long surgery, Victor and his family will embark on a long and challenging physical and emotional recovery. While Victor recovers, he will be unable to work. Funds gathered will aid his living expenses, medical bills, and future plans for recovery, as there is a high chance of relapse after remission. In the meantime, he plans to create new memories of love and laughter with his family.
