Holaaa family & friends from across the world!
As some of you may know, I am currently in my third year of dental school at University College Cork (UCC). Time is definitely flying! To enhance my dental school experience, I have become a member of the Dental Outreach society at UCC. Dental Outreach is a longstanding tradition run by third year dental students at UCC, helping to bridge the gap in oral healthcare in developing regions of Nepal.
We are currently planning our charity trip to Nepal in July 2019, a trip that I have been both passionate about and have been looking forward to volunteer on since my undergraduate days.
I am fundraising on behalf of Around Good People, a non-profit organization, with the ultimate goal of facilitating dental care in remote Nepalese villages (such as fillings, sealants, cleanings, fluoride, and extractions), and to promote prevention of oral diseases through education. All services provided by Around Good People are free, with the aim to make long term changes in the oral health of those in need. The money raised will help cover the costs of my travel, program fee, translation, materials, and equipment needed to provide these supervised dental services in Nepal. I will be covering any additional personal costs incurred on this trip.
According to the United Nations, Nepal ranks 138th in the world in overall human development, and about one-half of the Nepalese people live in poverty. Dentistry, along with most other health care services, is almost nothing in these parts of the world.
Although under-appreciated and ambiguous at times, the relationship between the oral cavity and the rest of the body has important consequences on chronic conditions prevalent in the human population. Periodontal disease may manifest as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and have the ability to cause adverse pregnancy effects (such as preterm birth and low birth weight).
To give you a sense of the need for oral health intervention in Nepal, here are a couple overwhelming statistics:
* Health Organization (WHO) report has determined that PTB is the second leading cause of death in children under five, and that the rate is inclining with nearly 12% of all infants now. Periodontal disease needs to be controlled!
* 3,92,831 Nepalese have dental caries/toothache
* 73,309 have periodontal and gum disease
* 62,747 have other disorders of the oral mucosa
* 1,13,819 have oral ulcer, and other related diseases
There's a reason why going to the dentist is so expensive! Here's a look at how much certain procedures can cost, and what your donation can help accomplish:
* Extraction - $112
* Amalgam Filling - $50
* Composite Filling - $130
* Cleaning - $75
* Sealants- $40/ tooth
If you could please help support this wonderful organization by sharing this page and by making a donation (however small), I'd really appreciate it! Every dollar counts and can have a huge impact! Thank you for all of your support and love!
