Great North Run for Dementia UK

After successfully raising money for Alzheimer’s UK last year, I’m going to run the Great North Run again for Dementia UK.

Those nearest and dearest to me will know the impact dementia has had on my little family and how important these charities are.

After many years of symptoms and a very steady cognitive decline, my wonderful, supportive and kind Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2022.

Similar to my dad, my lovely little mam, who was truly the sweetest soul, was diagnosed with dementia and experienced a decline in her cognition at an unforgivable rate before she sadly left this world in 2023.

This horrible disease changed every aspect of my parents personalities, except for their love and kindness for eachother, myself and their little cat. Their ability to care for themselves has been taken away by this cruel illness and I hope going forwards, there will be a cure to prevent anyone else going through this.

Dementia is an umbrella term for several subtypes that affect a persons memory, other cognitive abilities and behaviour that interfere significantly with a person's ability to care for themself.

There are currently around one million people in the UK with a diagnosis of dementia – and almost all of us will unfortunately know someone living with the condition.

Those that know me personally will know how difficult this is for me to open up and discuss my parents in this way, but I hope I can raise some money and hopefully be able to make a small change now which will lead to a big impact in the future for those diagnosed with dementia.

I’ve joined the GNR late this year and I don’t think I’ve even sped walk since before Christmas so all the love, support and hopefully donations will get me through to the finish line.
