Sylvie's Bat Mitzvah Project

Hi, my name is Sylvie. This GoFundMe is for my Bat Mitzvah project to raise money for the NJY Camps Scholarship Fund. Part of becoming a Bat Mitzvah is taking on the responsibility of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. A big part of my journey towards being a Jewish young adult who cares about her community and Jewish values has been driven by attending Jewish sleep-away camp. This year will be my fifth summer at NJY Camps. Going to Jewish camp, learning about Jewish values, and experiencing a connection to Jewish identity all while having an amazing summer with my best friends has been a life-changing experience for me. I believe that every Jewish kid should have the opportunity to attend Jewish camp, regardless of their financial circumstances. That is why I am raising money for the NJY Camps Scholarship Fund for my Bat Mitzvah Project.

I also want to further my Jewish education and sense of Jewish identity by reading books about Judaism, with Jewish characters, or by Jewish authors. I am going to be holding a read-a-thon to raise money for my project. You can donate money to sponsor me as I work my way through my book list. All the money will be donated to NJY Camps. So far, I have read The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, The Wave by Todd Strasser, and Right Back at You by Carolyn Mackler. Reading books about the Holocaust is important to me because two of my great-grandparents were Holocaust survivors, but I also want to explore books about modern Jewish identity and Israeli culture. On my TBR list are The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan, The Blackbird Girls by Anne Blankman, My Basmati Bat Mitzvah by Paula J.
