I’m honestly so embarrassed and heartbroken to even be writing this. I didn’t know where to start — this is not something I ever imagined myself doing — but it’s just been too much for us to handle alone.

I’m not sure if my siblings will be upset with me for putting this out there, but honestly, it’s felt it's been a lot of weight on me. At the end of the day, I have to do what I can for someone who’s always been there for me and to help my mom.

A couple of weeks ago, my stepfather, Ladislao (we call him Aris), was arrested and taken to the Collier County Jail. He’s been in this country since 2006, never had a criminal record and he’s been married to my mom for about five years. They were in the process of getting his papers fixed when everything happened.

On September 12, my mom’s blood pressure went up and she had a severe headache, so she asked Aris to drive her to the hospital. On the way there, a deputy pulled them over, because of my moms tag, My mom tried to explain the situation, but they didn’t care — they arrested him on the spot.

We’ve been working with Donald Day, his criminal attorney, and the fees have already been extremely high. Aris is now under an ICE hold, since there's deputies who work as Ice agents in the Collier county jail. This means he won't be let out even with Donald Day clearing his violation, we would need to hire an immigration lawyer, and that’s very expensive. (Over 10,000)

Since we just bought my home, I’ve helped as much as I possibly can, but we’ve reached a point where we truly need help.

Aris has been an amazing stepfather — one of the kindest, most hard-working men I’ve ever known. He’s worked in landscaping since he got to this county paying taxes, and doing everything he can to provide for my mom, and helping us with our kids, Seeing her so heartbroken has been unbearable.

I hate asking for help, and honestly, sometimes it’s harder to ask family than strangers for help, as some family member will remind you of it forever.

But if you know what so many Hispanic families are going through right now, you’ll understand how unfair this situation feels. There are people with far worse records walking free, while good, honest people like Aris are stuck in a system that doesn’t see their worth.

Aris hasn’t been back to his country (Guatemala) in so long. His whole life is here. He’s devastated — and I refuse to let him fight this battle alone.

It’s taken everything in me to reach out like this, but if you can find it in your heart or your possibilities to help, I’m deeply grateful. Anything helps — today it’s my family in need.

Honestamente me da mucha pena y tristeza tener que escribir esto. No sabía ni por dónde empezar — nunca imaginé tener que hacer algo así — pero ha sido demasiado para mi.

No sé si mis hermanos se van a molestar conmigo por compartir esto públicamente, pero sinceramente, he sentido que todo el peso ha estado sobre mí. Al final del día, tengo que hacer lo que esté a mi alcance por alguien que siempre ha estado ahí para mí y por mi mamá.

Hace un par de semanas, mi padrastro, Ladislao (a quien llamamos Aris), fue arrestado y llevado a la cárcel del condado de Collier. Él ha estado en este país desde el 2006, nunca ha tenido antecedentes criminales, y ha estado casado con mi mamá por casi cinco años. Ellos estaban en el proceso de arreglar sus papeles cuando todo esto pasó.

El 12 de septiembre, la presión arterial de mi mamá subió mucho y tuvo un fuerte dolor de cabeza, así que le pidió a Aris que la llevara al hospital. En el camino, un oficial los detuvo por la placa del carro. Mi mamá trató de explicarle la situación, pero no le importó — arrestaron a Aris en ese mismo momento.

Hemos estado trabajando con Donald Day, su abogado criminal, y los honorarios ya han sido muy altos. Ahora Aris está bajo una retención de inmigración (ICE hold), ya que en la cárcel del condado de Collier hay agentes que también trabajan con ICE. Esto significa que, aunque el abogado logre limpiar su caso criminal, no lo van a dejar salir. Necesitamos contratar un abogado de inmigración, y eso es muy costoso (más de $10,000).

Desde que compré mi casa, he ayudado todo lo que he podido, pero hemos llegado a un punto en el que realmente necesitamos ayuda.

Aris ha sido un padrastro increíble — una de las personas más trabajadoras y bondadosas que he conocido. Ha trabajado en jardinería desde que llegó a este país, siempre pagando impuestos, ayudando a mi mamá y apoyándonos con mis hijos. Ver a mi mamá tan destrozada ha sido insoportable.

Me cuesta mucho pedir ayuda, y a veces es más difícil pedirle ayuda a la familia que a extraños, porque algunos nunca te dejan olvidarlo.

Pero si conoces lo que muchas familias hispanas están viviendo hoy en día, sabes lo injusto que puede ser este sistema. Hay personas con historiales mucho peores caminando libres, mientras que hombres buenos y honestos como Aris quedan atrapados en un proceso que no reconoce su valor.

Si puedes ayudarnos de cualquier manera — incluso solo con tus oraciones — te lo agradeceré con todo mi corazón. Mi madre y yo oraremos por tu familia también.

Aris no ha regresado a su país (Guatemala) en muchos años. Toda su vida está aquí. Está devastado — y yo me niego a dejar que enfrente esta batalla solo.
