Stand with Sex Workers in SA - Sex Work Law Reform

Sex Work in South Australia:

South Australia has the most archaic sex work laws in the country. These outdated laws put sex workers at three times the risk of experiencing violent and/or threatening behaviour.  In an industry where over 90% of workers are women, this amounts to state-sanctioned violence against women.

Sex workers cannot rely on SAPOL for assistance and many have been subjected to punitive policing including raids and arrests - simply for working in the industry.

Sex workers cannot exercise their rights as workers and are more vulnerable to exploitation, Work Health and Safety incidents as well as discrimination due to our current laws.

Sex Work Law Reform in South Australia:

South Australia has attempted to reform our sex work laws 13 times before but some Members of Parliament continue to ignore the reality of the situation as well as refuse to meet with & listen to sex workers. Despite many recognising the "desperate need for law reform", in 2019, Members voted against moving an internationally supported and internationally successful decriminalisation bill into the debate stage.

In 2019, as many as 14 Members of Parliament from both Labor and Liberal that voted against the decrim bill refused to meet with the Sex Industry Decrim Action Committee (SIDAC) or local peer-sex worker organisation the Sex Industry Network (SIN).

Currently, Tammy Franks MLC has introduced a bill, the 14th attempt for sex work law reform in SA, so sex workers can be safe at work! The Repeal of Sex Work Offences bill was introduced to SA Parliament in February 2020. We remain hopeful that this attempt at law reform will be successful.

Who is SIDAC:

The Sex Industry Decriminalisation Action Committee (SIDAC) are a group of sex workers, allies, unionist, human rights, community and health organisations, Members of Parliament, women's rights organisations and legal services representatives who meet regularly to build community and political support for decriminalisation of sex work in South Australia through lobbying, media and public campaigning. We are a completely volunteer committee so your donations are very appreciated!

Stand with sex workers and demand that your local representative MP stops and listens to the sex workers of South Australia. You can also assist the campaign by donate to SIDAC.

You can find out more about sex work, law reform and SIDAC at our website: www.sexworklawreformsa.com

SIDAC Needs:

We need materials to be able to campaign for sex work law reform and get South Australians honest and real information about the decriminalisation of sex work. We also need to be able to keep our website running and to get out into the community at every opportunity. All this takes money and as SIDAC is run completely by volunteers, any donations goes a long way in the fight to have sex workers' human and workers rights recognised.
