Swimming for HME-MO!
Donation protected
Long-distance swimming in cold, turbulent sea waters - I could never do that, with my rickety body, I thought. That is not cut out for an HME-MO patient. Luckily, my soul was quite indignant at this limiting conviction. My HME-MO wasn’t going to stop me, was it!?
On 30 August, I will join Be Tough to swim 7 kilometers across the Marsdiep Straight, from the island of Texel back to the beaches of Den Helder on the mainland, straight through the sea, and for a good cause! With this activity I will raise attention for the mental aspects of dealing with HME-MO. HME-MO is a hereditary skeletal affliction that causes numerous bone proliferations. These lumps cause reduced mobility, and are, therefore, regularly surgically removed, causing scars and discomfort.
Only in the last few years, I realized how much influence HME-MO has had on my life. In both good and bad ways. I strongly believe that, especially in my teen years, not enough attention was paid to this. Now that I live with a teenager myself who has HME-MO too, I notice that this has, with the years, barely seen any change. It is even missing in the overarching Research Agenda by the HME-MO Research Fund.
With this swim and your loving donations I want to provide a first contribution to generating structural attention to the psychological consequences of traumas and limiting convictions as the result of HME-MO. A first (salt water) drop in the ocean, but I have to start somewhere!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your support!
