Greetings! My name is Jana. I am a pool lifeguard in a small community on Salt Spring Island, BC. We are very fortunate to have an indoor pool on a small southern gulf island as it provides community members with an opportunity to learn to swim, exercise, benefit therapeutically, and stay safe while doing so.
However, we often struggle with staff shortages for various reasons. One of those reasons is that lifeguarding is a profession that requires training and certifications that many youth are unable to pay. Lifeguard training certifications (bronze medallion, bronze cross, national lifeguard) cost upwards of $900 or more for a 2 year certification. Quality lifeguards play an important role in keeping our aquatic facilities safe for swimming each year. We need lifeguards because they Save Lives!
The leading cause of death for children under 6 is drowning. Lifeguards play an important role in reducing this breathtaking statistic. We must support youth in lower and middle class families to engage in these employment opportunities. With the financial help of community members like you, we can provide needed training that is necessary for youth wanting to make a difference in the prevention of drownings.
Join me in swimming 10km to spread awareness and if you are financially able to I ask you to contribute to the Deserving Youth Lifeguard Scholarship Fund which will send 2 or more youth through our lifeguard training programs. Thank you so much for your generosity!
Note: this fundraiser is hosted as a personal fundraiser and is in no way affiliated with the CRD. 100% of funds raised will go to compensating lifeguard training for deserving youth.
