On 11 July 2020, the handsome Jameson Salt was born, arriving on his sister’s 2nd birthday. Within his first hour of life, Jameson started having difficulty breathing, and was promptly admitted to the Canberra Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He was placed on significant respiratory support, and diagnosed with Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn.
Over the weeks that followed, it became clear that there was more to this case than the original diagnosis implied. The doctors trialled a series of medications, conducted multiple scans, and administered oxygen therapy in an attempt to treat Jameson, however his condition has unfortunately only continued to worsen. As a result of his undiagnosed condition, Jameson has difficulties feeding, and has spent much of his life being tube fed. His oxygen levels suffer when he becomes distressed, which is a regular occurrence due to the wide range of procedures and medications he is administered daily. At times this distress can lead to his oxygen levels becoming so low that he is solely dependant on artificial oxygen to keep his lungs working. This in turn puts extreme pressure on his heart, which can be life threatening for little Jameson.
One month on, and still with no answers, Jameson has been admitted to the Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney for management by a collection of the top respiratory and cardiac specialists in Australia. With the likely causes of his condition being ruled out by the doctors in Canberra, the Sydney team are now investigating rare conditions and diseases as the cause. Sadly Jameson’s treatment is on hold until the cause is identified. It is likely that Jameson will require major surgery if the Doctors are to have any chance of better understanding his condition; a procedure that will put even further stress on his tiny lungs and heart. His condition remains critical, and highly unpredictable, leaving Jameson and his family in a very difficult and vulnerable position.
Jameson’s Mum, Dad, and Sister have temporarily relocated to Sydney to be by his side, and attend various daily meetings with specialists. Even during this time of uncertainty for the family they remain hopeful and positive. They are eagerly awaiting advances in Jameson’s treatment, and ultimately, a diagnosis and prognosis for this very special little person who has already endured more than most within only 4 weeks.
Funds raised from this campaign, in conjunction with that run by Flour and Frost, will be used to support the family as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.
On behalf of the Salt family, thank you for your generosity.
