This GoFundMe page has been created with the awareness of Phil and Shannon. At Shannon’s request, this page will also be used to share updates on Phil. Please check back here.
We are reaching out on behalf of an incredible family who has given so much to our community and now needs our collective support.
Phil was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2022. After his initial treatment, he showed his trademark resilience, returning to work at sea and living life to the fullest. Sadly, the cancer returned in early 2025 and metastasized into peritoneal carcinomatosis. Over the past year, Phil has bravely battled this late-stage diagnosis, undergoing various chemotherapy treatments and exploring every option to slow its progression and maintain his quality of life.
Throughout this incredibly challenging time, the Sutherlands’ priority has always been their boys. Phil and Shannon have worked tirelessly to keep life as normal and supportive as possible for them. While Shannon initially stepped away from work to care for Phil and recover from a knee injury, she has since joined a new workplace that has been a pillar of support for their family.
Unfortunately, after exhausting all viable treatment options, Phil and Shannon have decided he will return home for his final weeks. He will spend his remaining time surrounded by the warmth and love of his family and friends.
Once Phil is settled back at home, the family will share appropriate times for those who wish to drop by and visit.
The Sutherlands are deeply rooted in the Burnaby hockey community. Both Phil and Shannon have been dedicated coaches, volunteers, and board members with Burnaby Minor Hockey and Metro Minor Ball Hockey for years. Their passion for the game lives on through their sons, and for them, the rink has always been a second home.
If your child has had the good fortune to be coached by Phil or Shannon, you know the kind of people they are: dedicated, passionate, and always striking the perfect balance of discipline, skill, and fun. Their involvement extends to Sperling Elementary as well, where they have organized hot lunches, fall pumpkin patches, pancake breakfasts, and contributed to the school’s emergency response efforts. They are always the first to step up when others are in need.
Now, it is our turn to step up for them.
Any donation, big or small, will give Shannon the space to focus on what matters most: being present with Phil and their boys during this time. It also provides Phil with the peace of mind that the community they helped build is standing firmly behind them.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support.
