
Supporting Rainbow Children Home

We have been volunteering in Rainbow Children Home, located in Pokhara, Nepal.
Rainbow Children Home has always been dedicated to changing and/or rescuing lives and helping marginalised children (abandoned, orphans, parents not in a position to afford them, etc).
To that extent, and in addition to other social initiatives, they are currently protecting, securing and giving a safe home to c.30 children, from 4 years old to 18-20 years old teenagers.
While we have already contributed to refurbish some rooms, improve daily conditions and make children happy during the first three weeks of our stay (see below the list of achievements), fair to say there’s still plenty of things to do, conscious donations have been dramatically slowing down since Covid.
Given many people have asked us, and insisted to contribute as well, we are thrilled to open this fund raising to keep supporting children during the last week of our stay (leaving the 25th of May). Please be mindful this will be tax deductible through this platform.
Immediate identified and remaining needs:
1. Special treatment for « Chicken » Purnima (4-year old girl suffering from pneumonia) - min. ~500€
Full check-up at the hospital for X-ray and blood test (notably lungs as she was found out abandoned in the rain with worms in her body before joining the children home)
1-year stock of pampers
2. Refurbishing - min. ~300€
- New ceiling for girls’ dormitory - about to fall anytime soon because of rains, and already pouring directly into some beds in case of heavy rains
- Storage baskets for girls’ dormitories
3. Daily life hygiene - min. ~800€
- 1x treatment against bed bugs for each bed
- Towels for everyone
- Water bottles for everyone
- 6-month stock of soap, dish cleaner, shampoo (against loose), toilet rolls, sanitizer, fabric condition
- 6-month stock of tissues
- 1 new t-shirt for everyone
- 1 new pants for everyone
- 2x new underwear for everyone
- Rubbishes (currently none) with 6-month stock of rubbish bags (currently none)
4. 1-year weekly delivery of basket of fresh fruits - min ~2,000€
- Targeting 2-3x fruits per child 5x a week (vs. currently no fruit at all or on very rare occasions)
- Children are currently fed with dal bath on a daily basis (rice with lentils) 2x on a daily basis. On too rare occasions, food is diversified (through local or foreign donation)
5. 1- Scholarship fees for small children need to be paid within 3 weeks otherwise they won’t be able to take their exam ~450€
Many other things to be done (e.g. 1-year payment of salary for a permanent nanny for everyone), but the above is a non-exhaustive list of what needs urgent attention.
Already funded and completed since our arrival:
✔️ Classroom:
- New ceiling in children classroom to make the room much cooler while studying after school (vs. sheet-metal roof previously)
- New wall fans
- Mosquito window and door protections
✔️ Kitchen:
- New pressure cooker and mixer
- Sink set up in the outdoor part of the kitchen, alongside cement-made shelves (vs. none previously - children had to wash on the floor and leave dishes on the dusty floor outside) and cement works
✔️ Dormitories:
- Window protection against mosquitos
- Replacement of a broken and dangerous window in the corridor of girls dormitories
- Fixing of 5x metal wardrobes in girls dormitories
- Replacement of 2x wardrobes by 2x fresh new tailor-made wooden-made wardrobes for girls dormitories
✔️ Metal works to protect hazardous areas:
- Metal bars across windows from 1st/2nd floor where children could have easily fallen down
- Metal shelf protecting water machines in a usual playground area
✔️ NEW outdoor playground/entertainment area:
- Clean-up & tidy-up of a previously dump storage of old and dusty things area
- Painting
- Fake grass
- Tables and shelves
- Comfy pillows to lay down
- Plants
- Decoration (baskets, bamboos, etc)
- Shoe rack
- Games (of which baby-foot, board games, baby basket-balls, dolls, toys, beauty mirror, card games, etc)
✔️ Plumbing works:
- 2x new bathrooms re-opened equipped with new shower/sink/tap/toilets
- 3x new shower/sinks/taps in girls dormitories - notably fixing water leakage
- New machine to level up water for shower in boy’s dormitories
- 1x new sink for kitchen alongside plumbing work
- Plumbing work for the washing machine room
✔️ Electricity works:
- Fixing of all disabled bulbs
- New system in the classroom
- New electricity set up in the new playground area
✔️ Others:
- New 12kg washing machine (vs. none for more than several years), alongside some refurbishment in the new room to set up the machine
- 1x Iron
- 30 pairs of sandals
- 30 pairs of rain coats
- 17 pieces of cotton-made sheet beds for girls
- 1x special blanket for 1 child « Chicken »
- The above excludes exciting activities for children like water the park, outdoor cinema, barbecue, pizza restaurant, etc, for everyone
