Supporting Quinn & Maci After the Sudden Loss of Their Mom

On Sunday January 25th, 2026, Kaitlin "Newt" Newton, 37, was driving her two daughters - one 8 years old and one just 6 months - when she apparently felt something was terribly wrong. In her final moments, Newt did what she had always done: she protected her girls, guiding her pickup truck safely to the side of the road, coming to rest in a ditch.

There was no collision, no airbag deployment, and most of all, absolutely no harm to her beloved daughters. Neighbours seeing the truck come to rest in front of their house rushed out to investigate and called 911. Tragically, Newt did not survive her medical emergency, but thanks to Newt, her two daughters were unharmed and safe in the back seat.

Newt’s final act was one of extraordinary love and presence of mind to keep those girls safe. But now, her daughters face a heartbreaking reality, and they need our support.

Who Newt Was

Kaitlin Newton was a force of nature. She was known for her rugged athleticism as a fierce hockey defenseman and two-time provincial girls champion, and continued to enjoy playing in league and tournament games. She was an accomplished women’s rugby player and coach, and a graduate of Trent University. She was the kind of teammate everyone dreamed of - fearless, competitive, endlessly talented, and with a laugh so infectious it made every game and every moment brighter. Opponents wanted Newt on their team, while her teammates were truly blessed to have her fierce loyalty on and off the pitch, rink, and field.

She lived life with intensity and joy, and was known as an extremely loyal and courageous friend, always willing to step up and defend those she loved and cared about.

She raised her daughters with that same strength and taught her 8-year-old to be capable, caring, and resilient. Her final act - steering that truck safely to protect her girls - was pure Newt.

How you can help

These two sisters have experienced the unimaginable loss of their mom. In the midst of grief, their entire world has changed overnight.

As they move forward, the girls face many transitions, including travel, counselling, and the coordination required to support two children across different households. Throughout this process, the shared priority of everyone who loves them is to keep the sisters connected, supported, and able to spend meaningful time together while stable arrangements are put in place. This fundraiser helps cover the immediate and ongoing costs of that transition, including travel, care needs, and resources that support their emotional well-being during an incredibly difficult time.

Every contribution, big or small, helps create stability, consistency, and support for Newt's two girls. Let's come together and support them.

Details on a celebration of life will come when the family is ready.
