Supporting my mum Sheila Fisher after her stroke

Donation protected
Hi my name is Sharon and I am fundraising for my mum, Sheila Fisher.

Up until 25/09/2024 my mum lived a normal fully independent life.

On this date, we received a phonecall that would change our lives forever.

My mums neighbour, had noticed that my mum had not collected a tub, left on her windowsill from the day before, which is so unlike het. He contacted myself and my husband to share his anguish.

My husband and I, went up to my mum's thinking the worst. When we opened the door, we found my mum face down on the floor, not moving.

However, fortunately mum responded to me and my husband called for an ambulance. The paramedics arrived and did the necessary checks and made the decision to get my mum checked out at the hospital.

On arrival to a and e, following examinations and tests, we were informed that mum had had a bleed on the brain, a stroke, and was verging on being hypothermic at 30.3 degrees centigrade.

The staff at Victoria Hospital, we're fantastic, and soon had her on the stroke ward.

Due to the bleed being on the left hand side of the brain, mum was paralysed on the right hand side of her body, unable to move her right arm or leg. Mum spent 2 and and a half weeks in this hospital.

Through support physio and rehabilitation. Mum gained movement in her right arm after 6 weeks.

Unable to move, mum was bed-ridden during this time. Various examinations and assessments were made and the decision was made to move mum to the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline.

The staff were fantastic and supported mum during her rehabilitation and enabled mum to eventually walk, unaided with a walking frame.

On the 19th December we received the news that mum would be able to go home for Christmas, with a support package, including 4 carers supporting mum in her home on a daily basis.

The carers have been great and helped mum to settle back into her home providing the care and support she needs.

Having been independent, to now relying on others to support her, has been a long enduring journey for mum. Finding ways to do things that she took for granted before, and learning to take the support to enable her to achieve daily routines, tasks and responsibilities.

Through the support of her caregivers, family and close friends, mum is on the road to recovery.

The reason for this fundraising page is to provide survivors of strokes to gain the support, advice and essential services/equipment required to allow them to lead as normal a life as possible in their own homes as well as giving back to the the services who supported them on their journey.

If you are able, please give what you can to enable Sheila and her family to give something back to the people who have supported her on this journey and help the survivors of strokes get their lives back on track and to provide any means necessary to give them the independence and life they deserve.
