On Tuesday February 24th, the fire alarm started going off at Jess’s apartment building. Thinking someone had just burnt their dinner (again) she opened the front door and was shocked to be met with smoke and flames from the end of the hallway. She grabbed her husband Elver and her 5 year old son Mason and a few important documents and ran outside, only to go right back in when they realized their elderly neighbor was still inside. A fresh two feet of snow on the ground covered all the fire hydrants but one and clutter blocked the firefighters from entering the unit where the fire originated. Thankfully everyone made it out safely, but the building wasn’t so lucky and was condemned by the fire marshals the next morning.
They have called a small hotel room home ever since. While their unit was spared from the flames, it suffered irreparable smoke damage. Since the fire, they have had less than an hour in their apartment to gather any remaining important documents, some clothes, and a few other items deemed ‘safe’ by the inspector. Unfortunately, almost all of Mason’s toys, most of their furniture, many more of their belongings were not and will have to be disposed of.
Jess is an avid member of Burn Boot Camp Burlington and their community has been nothing short of amazing. Between organizing meal trains and donating toys to Mason, it has been truly incredible to watch the outpouring of support. To brag, Jess has not missed a day of camps this year despite everything going on!
The time has come for them to move on and start over. Unfortunately, as we all know, insurance only does so much. This money would go right to Jess, Elver, and Mason’s journey to rebuild, starting with a new apartment and furniture.
