Supporting Female Education in Ghana

Hi everyone, I’m Esther founder and team lead at the Coastline Communities Development Initiative a non profit women and girl child empowerment center in Kokrobite, Accra- Ghana. I’m raising this funds to support girls education in Kokrobite-Oshiyie communities, Ghana.

We no longer want to dream of a better world and improved communities, we want to take the steps to make it happen. Myself and the CCDI team is on a mission to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy in underserved coastal communities in Ghana. We are embarking on a life changing campaign to provide opportunities for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds in these communities to access senior high education in Ghana.

According to our recent community survey and data collection, less than 40% of girls in these communities access senior high education after their basic level education with majority of them dropping out primarily due to lack of funding to support their educational dreams. In Ghana, even though senior high school is technically free, but with none available in the vicinity of these rural communities, most girls who gain admission to high schools, have to travel long and costly distances to attend school. If not, then apply for boarding accommodation ( which is too expensive for the average family to afford). Thus the girls end up dropping out entirely since the families cannot afford the necessities for boarding thereby squashing their dreams for the future entirely!

These year, we are on a mission to ease the burden of these families and support not less than 10 girls in these areas access senior high education through the realizing ‘A GIRL’S DREAM PROJECT’ by supporting the girls with bursary needs, boarding necessities including trunks, chop boxes, mattresses and pillows, stationery items, school bags and sanitary supplies etc

We want to join forces with individuals passionate about girl child education and women empowerment to support these girls achieve their dreams for a brighter future in turn reducing the school dropout and teenage pregnancy rates and combating the cycles of poverty in these rural coastal communities in Ghana.
