As many of you know, my mom, Elyse Smith, lost her 10 year battle with autoimmune illness and cancer in February. For those 10 years, my grandma, Susan Smith, has been our champion. She financially and emotionally supported my mom and I on her own after my grandfather passed and my mom was much too sick to work. For the last 6 months of my mother's life, I quit my job to take care of her full time. While my grandma and I would do it all over again, the financial strain on our family is palpable. Between high coverage insurance, costly medications, specialists, treatments, surgeries, and weeks long hospital stays, our savings are gone.
