Supporting Brave Beau

With an incredibly heavy heart, we share the news of what the amazing Beddow family of Moose Jaw has been going through recently. In February 2022, 8 year old Beau and his sister had what was thought to be a stomach bug. It seemed to hit Beau harder than his sister and his symptoms were not going away. It was thought that Beau’s symptoms may be attributed to the juvenile arthritis medication he was taking; however, Beau’s parents, Shane and Kassidy, decided to have his eyes checked by a professional as a precaution. On Friday March 2, it was found Beau had severe bilateral papilledema (swelling of the nerve that goes from the eyes to the brain). On Tuesday March 8, he had an emergency MRI which revealed a large mass at the base of Beau’s brain. Beau is now awaiting a high risk surgery to remove as much of the mass as possible and determine the grade/malignancy. The surgery is planned for Tuesday March 15 at the Jim Pattison’s Children’s Hospital. The family will have to wait a few weeks for Beau to recover before knowing what comes next in his treatment plan.

As you can imagine, there is a lot of risks that come along with brain surgery, and what they find. Shane and Kassidy aren’t sure how long they will be away from work, and what type of needs Beau may have after this life changing surgery. The family will be juggling life between two cities, with Beau remaining at the Jim Pattison’s Children’s Hospital during the recovery process and attempting to maintain a sense of normalcy for his little sister, Elle, in their home base of Moose Jaw.
Beau is a typical 8 year old Saskatchewan boy. He loves all things hockey, baseball, dinosaurs and Pokémon. His giggle lights up any room and every one who knows him comments on his kind heart. He loves to tease his little sister Elle and hates to comb his hair. Most importantly Beau is BRAVE and STRONG. He was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis 2 years ago and has handled it like a champ. He has an large family and incredible community who will support him through this next journey.
Watching a family go through these horrific times leaves us all feeling so helpless. This platform gives us a way to feel like we can help. We can’t take away the pain, but this is a small gesture we CAN do, to lighten the load of what the next while will bring for this family. Thank you for the love, support, and prayers for Beau.
** If you are discussing Beau’s illness with your children, please keep it simple. So far Beau knows that he has something in his brain which is making him sick and he needs surgery to remove it.
