Greetings from Baby Ava!
Taylor and Travis welcomed Ava Ray to the world on January 6, 2021. She was immediately moved to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit due to erratic blood sugar levels and oxygen deficiencies.
While in the NICU, it was determined that Ava was exposed to the CMV virus while in the womb. The infection caused rare developmental delays. CMV infection in utero can cause vision and hearing issues, blood platelet deficiency, seizures, enlarged liver and spleen, and cognitive/motor delay. Many of these issues can persist throughout an individual’s life.
Ava has a team of specialists that are overseeing her care and monitoring her development, including a hematologist, infectious disease doctor, and physical and occupational therapists.
Ava is currently taking a specially compounded medication that is made for her at Parkview Hospital’s pharmacy. The medication involves a substantial monthly out of pocket cost for Taylor and Travis. The hope is that the medication will prevent damage to Ava’s vision, hearing, and cognitive development.
Ava has multiple therapy sessions every week, focusing on her hands, shoulders, and feet, as they are very rigid. Additional specialized therapies and medical equipment are in her future. The cost for these treatments will far exceed the cost of her medications.
Based on Ava’s diagnosis, Taylor and Travis have applied for the Medicaid disability waiver to help with the ongoing intensive therapies she will require long term. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ava’s wait time for approval is estimated to be 9 to 14 months, and coverage is not applied retroactively.
Ava’s parents are facing an enormous financial burden over this first year of her life. This fundraiser will help Ava to get her treatments and medications, and it would mean the world to us if you’re able to help. Thank you so much from our entire family for any amount you’re able to donate.
