Supporting Andrés' healing process from mental illness

Today I would like to talk to you about the challenge that my older brother, Andrés is going through, a challenge that began when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 19. From that moment on, he began a journey full of emotional and financial challenges for the whole family.

After several years of psychological and psychiatric treatment, the right treatment was found. From then on, my brother was able to lead a relatively 'normal' life, studying, working, making friends and taking part in family activities.

In 2017, when my mother was diagnosed with vascular dementia, Andrés and my second brother Luis became her carers. It was a very difficult job, given Andrés' illness and the fact that Luis was recovering from a stroke and heart defect that nearly killed him.

In all these years, Andrés has had two major crises that have required hospitalisation. The first was almost 30 years ago and the second on 22 December 2024. The latter was more severe than the first and, according to the psychiatrist's report, included paranoid delusions, changes in sensory perception, heteroaggression and altered thinking. Due to the intensity of the crisis, it was not possible to resolve it on an outpatient basis and he had to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital in the city of Caracas for stabilisation and recovery.

The specialists tell us that this is a degenerative disease, and that Andrés has shown a progressive deterioration of certain cognitive abilities and a significant reduction in his mental functioning, which has led the doctors to conclude that he will have to remain in hospital for an extended period of time.

This emergency situation, which occurred just before Christmas, has complicated my family's financial situation and is difficult to pay for on our own due to the cost of hospitalisation, psychiatric treatment and maintaining all of his personal care and treatment needs.

This is in addition to the medication that both my 82-year-old mother, who has dementia, and my younger brother have to take for their own health complications.

My sister Adriana, her partner and I are looking for ways to help as much as we can, but this situation is out of our hands and unsustainable in the short, medium and long term. It is well known that the health situation in Venezuela is complicated and that maintaining adequate medical treatment can be costly.

Today we are appealing for your generosity and support to help us meet the following costs:

- Psychiatric hospitalisation.

- Psychiatric nursing care.

- Psychopharmacological treatment.

- Personal hygiene products and meals.

- And other miscellaneous expenses.

Your support will go a long way in helping us to meet all the expenses we will incur over the next few months of this year, both to stabilise my brother and see if it is possible for him to return home, as well as to support my brother Luis, who is not only dealing with his own health problems, but is unable to work as Mum's main carer.

Hoy quiero hablarte del reto que atraviesa mi hermano mayor, Andrés, un desafío que comenzó cuando, con 19 años, fue diagnosticado con esquizofrenia. Desde ese momento, comenzó un viaje lleno de retos emocionales y financieros para toda la familia.

Tras varios años de tratamiento psicológico y psiquiátrico, consiguieron dar con el tratamiento adecuado. A partir de entonces, mi hermano pudo desarrollar una vida relativamente «normal», ya que pudo estudiar, trabajar, hacer amigos y participar en actividades familiares.

En 2017, cuando a mi madre le diagnosticaron demencia vascular, Andrés y mi segundo hermano, Luis, se convirtieron en sus cuidadores. Una labor bien complicada de llevar a cabo, teniendo en cuenta la enfermedad de Andrés y el hecho de que Luis se estaba recuperando de un accidente cerebrovascular y una deficiencia cardíaca que por poco le cuesta la vida.

Durante todos estos años, Andrés ha tenido dos episodios importantes de crisis que han requerido hospitalización. Uno tuvo lugar hace casi 30 años y el segundo el 22 de diciembre de 2024. Este último fue más fuerte que el anterior y presentó ideas delirantes paranoides, alteraciones de la sensopercepción, heteroagresividad y alteración del pensamiento, entre otros, según el informe médico de la psiquiatra. Debido a la intensidad de la crisis, no fue posible resolverla de forma ambulatoria y tuvo que ser ingresado en un hospital psiquiátrico en la ciudad de Caracas para estabilizarlo y procurar su recuperación.

Los especialistas nos indican que esta enfermedad es degenerativa y que Andrés ha ido presentando un deterioro progresivo de ciertas capacidades cognitivas, así como una disminución considerable en su funcionamiento mental, por lo que los médicos concluyeron que debe permanecer recluido por un tiempo prolongado.

Esta situación de emergencia que se presentó justo antes de Navidad ha complicado la situación financiera de mi familia y es difícil de solventar por cuenta propia, debido al coste de la hospitalización, el tratamiento psiquiátrico y la manutención de todos sus requerimientos de aseo y tratamiento personal.

A esto hay que sumar la medicación que tanto mi madre, de 82 años y con demencia, como mi segundo hermano deben tomar por sus propias complicaciones de salud.

Mi hermana Adriana, su pareja y yo estamos buscando la manera de ayudar todo lo posible, pero esta situación se nos escapa de las manos y resulta insostenible a corto, medio y largo plazo. Es bien sabido que la situación del sistema de salud en Venezuela es complicada y que mantener los tratamientos médicos adecuados puede ser costoso.

Hoy apelamos a su generosidad y apoyo para poder cubrir los siguientes costes:

- Hospitalización psiquiátrica.

- Cuidados de enfermería psiquiátrica.

- Tratamiento psicofarmacológico.

- Productos de aseo personal y comidas.

- Y otros gastos varios.

Su apoyo nos será de gran utilidad para hacer frente a todos los gastos que iremos incurriendo en los próximos meses de este año, tanto para lograr estabilizar a mi hermano y evaluar si es posible que pueda volver a casa, así como para apoyar a mi hermano Luis, quien no solo está lidiando con sus propios problemas de salud, sino que, por ser el cuidador principal de mamá, no puede trabajar.
