My name is Zachary Fuselier, and I am a Life Scout with Troop 294 in San Jose, California. I am excited to be working with the South Bay Historical Railroad Society on my Eagle project: Constructing a historically accurate ice box for the Pullman passenger car at the Santa Clara railroad depot.
The Pullman car was built in 1912 for the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation Company, which later became part of Union Pacific. The car is now part of the SBHRS's railroad museum at the Santa Clara depot. It has been under renovation for more than a decade, and it's looking great! One piece that's missing is the ice box. Pullman cars such as this originally included an ice box to keep food fresh during long rail journeys. The SBHRS's car has a space for the ice box, but the box itself no longer exists. I have designed a replacement ice box to be installed in the car so visitors to the museum will get a sense of the authentic look and feel of the car when it was operating.
For my project, I will lead a team of volunteers (mostly other Scouts like me) in building a frame and attaching the original icebox doors to the frame. We will refinish the doors and make both the box and the doors look original. New hinges and door pulls will be added. We will then install the ice box in the Pullman car to serve as part of the museum exhibit going forward.
If you are interested in donating to this project, I would really appreciate your support. My goal is to raise $600 to help pay for supplies and materials to complete the project. Any leftover funds will be donated to the project beneficiary, the South Bay Historical Railroad Society.
I will post photos here when the project is completed. Thank you in advance for your support!
