Two years ago, Z's family arrived in the United States seeking safety from political persecution in Afghanistan. Catholic Charities helped them settle in Hampton Roads, but that support has now ended.
For Z—a devoted single father of three children—the past few years have been a steep learning curve. He and his children do not speak English and knew no one here at first. My mother, Diana, first met Z and his twin boys when they were walking down the street with fishing rods, trying to catch their own food. They had very little money or resources, but a determination to survive. The neighbors came together to buy the family bicycles so they could travel to jobs and stores more easily.
Today, the family faces a crisis. Z’s children—twin 8-year-old boys and a 13-year-old daughter—depend entirely on him. He works multiple manual labor jobs to provide for them, but recently, Z was hospitalized with serious health issues. His doctor has not yet cleared him to return to work. Without his income, he’s struggling to pay rent and keep food on the table. The family is now at risk of eviction if they do not come up with $3,500 by their court date on 8/19/25.
Despite everything, Z still believes in the American Dream. He is determined to return to work as soon as his health allows. In the meantime, he needs the kindness of others to get through this incredibly difficult period.
Your donation will help Z's family:
Pay rent and avoid eviction
Keep food on the table for the children
Cover basic living expenses until Z can return to work
Every contribution—no matter the size—makes a real difference. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing their story so it can reach more people.
From the bottom of their hearts, Z and his family thank you for your kindness, compassion, and generosity.
