Dear Sabin Community,
This fall, a few days before school started, a first grade student, Jamarie Herring, along with his kindergarten sister, Lauryn, lost their father. Just a few weeks ago, another 1st grade student in the same class, lost his father also. These are tragic incidents of loss for these families and we send our utmost condolences and support for the both of them.
However, the responses to these tragedies were different. The reactions show the inequalities that exist in our community. Unfortunately it took the loss of another child’s father a few weeks ago, for us to recognize that Jamarie’s family did not receive similar community support.
Our Sabin community is committed to recognizing inequities and to take actionable, concrete steps to change/disrupt this. We need to bring our attention to them, and take action to make changes. We aim to model equitable actions, just actions, in our school and community. Here is your chance to reflect Sabin's true spirit of care, and give this family the support they deserve.
We are committed to responding with support and care when tragic events occur in our community. At the end of the day, these children have lost their fathers, these families are grieving. Moving forward, as a community, this is what we do, show care, support, love and dismantle inequities. Our hearts are with these children and families.
