The Wildwood Soup Kitchen is nonprofit soup
kitchen ran by over 750 volunteers working 14 to 16 volunteer shifts a week to serves approximately 17,000 meals per month to around one thousand residents of Sumter County, many of whom are homebound seniors.
There landlord, The First Presbyterian Church of Wildwood, recently gave them the following ultimatum: reduce the space and time they’re using and pay double the rent, or be evicted the fellowship hall and find a new space by January. This is right after the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the busiest time of year for soup kitchens.
Barbara McManus, president of the board of directors for the Wildwood Soup Kitchen, said she and other leaders have known they've been outgrowing the space, but the news still came as a shock when they received the letter on Oct. 16.
They've already found a new building, but the need to raise $1.5 million outright on short notice and they need to be out of the current space by the end of December.
This is where we step in and help them feed people.
