Community Foods Market currently serves the 25,000 residents of West Oakland, many of whom already have difficulty getting to grocery stores or incurring the added costs of food delivery services. An independent grocery store with a small team, we've remained open during the California shelter-in-place order, and have had to adapt in unprecedented times to keep our community nourished as an essential service.
We have received seed funding to support the short-term implementation of two key initiatives by the end of March 2020 -- EBT/CalFresh discounts and West Oakland Senior Delivery. We are seeking funding from our broader community to extend the availability of these initiatives for an additional month in anticipation of the ongoing impacts of COVID-19.
Community Foods Market currently provides a 10% discount on Wednesdays on purchases made with CalFresh/SNAP benefits. Now more than ever, with immense job loss in our community, we are expand this program in the following ways during the COVID-19 crisis period:
• Increase the discount to 50%
• Make the discount available every day of the week
• Using direct mail and phone bank support to get the word out to CalFresh/SNAP recipients
With an additional $25,000 in funding we can extend this increased EBT discount for an additional month.
West Oakland Senior Delivery
Seniors are high risk if exposed to COVID-19 and have been strongly advised by health officials to not leave their homes . There are 4 low income senior housing sites located within a mile of Community Foods Market, with a collective total of 406 units.
According to census data, at least 10.95% of our community is considered “high-risk”. Older adults and people of any age with underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, lung disease, or heart disease, are at greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
With funding, Fresh Life Foundation will have the capacity to extend the availability of free, low- or no-contact deliveries during the COVID-19 crisis to elders of our community in the McClymonds, Clawson, and Hoover-Foster neighborhoods.
We would like to ensure that vulnerable members of our community continue to receive access to fresh food without risking their health, and that West Oakland residents can also be empowered to support their neighbors. Our three-pronged strategy is :
• Setting up 3 stipend positions for delivery personnel impacted by recent job loss due to COVID-19
• Running free grocery delivery each day of the week during shelter-in-place
• Using direct mail, phone bank, and community alliance support to get the word out to seniors age 65 and older
We've already established our protocol for safe deliveries to mitigate risk on elders, volunteers, and grocery store staff, and anticipate the cost of extending this service for an additional month to be $15,000.
We understand the importance of loved ones safe during the COVID-19 crisis, and are asking for $40,000 to cover the costs of extending these new and vital initiatives in support our vulnerable neighbors over the next two months. Thank you for your support. The teams at Community Foods Market and Fresh Life Foundation believe that together, we can uplift community through difficult times.
