Help Wayuu Children Start the New Year With Dignity
I'm Mike Melton and I raise money every December for my friends in La Guajira, Colombia.
The Wayuu people of La Guajira, Colombia, live in a beautiful but harsh desert region where daily life is shaped by poverty, limited access to basic services, and very few opportunities. For many Wayuu families, even simple school essentials like shoes, uniforms, and notebooks are out of reach.
This fundraiser is dedicated to helping indigenous Wayuu children begin school with dignity, confidence, and hope.
Why This Matters
Education is one of the few paths to a better future for these children. Yet many of them arrive at school in worn-out clothes, without proper shoes, and with no supplies of their own. Some share notebooks or pencils with siblings; others simply go without.
Lack of basic school materials doesn’t just make learning harder--it can be a source of shame and discouragement. No child should feel embarrassed to walk into a classroom because of what they are wearing or what they don’t have.
By helping provide school clothing and supplies, we’re giving these children a small but meaningful step up, and sending a clear message: *You are seen, you are valued, and your education matters.*
How Your Donation Will Help
Your support will go toward:
- Clothing for school - everyday school clothes, uniforms where required, and shoes suitable for walking long distances in hot, dry conditions.
- Basic school supplies - backpacks, notebooks, pencils, pens, coloring materials, and
- Extras that make a difference - things like reusable water bottles or small hygiene items when possible, to help children attend school more comfortably and consistently.
We are working closely with local contacts to identify families with the greatest need and to make sure help is given in a fair, respectful way that honors Wayuu culture and community.
Your Support Matters
Any contribution--large or small--has a real impact. Even the cost of a single backpack or pair of shoes can change how a child feels walking into school.
If you are not able to donate, you can still help by sharing this campaign with friends, family, or on social media. Spreading the word is a powerful form of support.
Thank you for standing with the Wayuu children of La Guajira and helping them take another step toward a brighter future, with dignity and pride.
