Vassar-Warner Home, Dutchess County’s sole nonprofit senior living facility, was forced to close its doors in October 2024 after serving the Hudson Valley community for over a century. The area’s most vulnerable population – seniors – were forced to leave their homes, and for several months, there was a noticeable gap in supportive care programs for our community.

As a longstanding pillar of Poughkeepsie and beyond, we knew that we had to find a way to rebuild a haven for seniors. Ericka Von Salews, longtime executive director of Vassar-Warner Home, and Richard Schuster, newly appointed board president and leader of the Save Vassar-Warner movement, worked tirelessly to determine the best path forward, not just for the Home, but for the elders in our community.

We’re proud to announce that we’re entering our next chapter as Vassar-Warner Home for the Day, Dutchess County’s newest private-pay social model adult day care, this June. By offering a home away from home, rather than simply caring for people’s loved ones, we can create a comfortable and compassionate environment for seniors to enjoy themselves, while giving their families and other caretakers peace of mind. From activities that promote social interaction to nutritious meals, we are determined to enrich seniors’ lives every day.

We wouldn’t be here without your support, but our fight isn’t over yet.

While we will continue to care for people’s loved ones, now in an extended capacity, our eventual goal is to reopen as a senior living facility by the end of 2025. Our goal is to raise $250,000 in start up funds to facilitate this endeavor.
