Hi friends and family,
The time has come and my sisters and I need your help. As many of you know, my mom, Valincia (Mutsy) Mitchell, has been battling COPD for years. Last September, things got more difficult for her. She's seen many different doctors and has had every imaginable test taken. Then in May, things took a turn for the worse. She spent 16 days in the hospital, and when she came home, she just wasn't the same. Then this September, she started coughing up blood and was rushed to the emergency room. Her CO2 was 120; normal is between 23-29. That means that because of her shallow breathing, it causes the carbon dioxide in her blood to build up. She spent 5 weeks in the hospital, then went into a skilled nursing facility (worst decision ever). Ten days after she was there, on October 7th, she was put back in the hospital where she needed to be intubated. Once they intubated her, her heart stopped, and they did CPR for 4 minutes. She did make a miraculous recovery and got to go home with Dawn for a whole 4 days. On November 30th, she was once again rushed to the emergency room, and Dawn chose to have her intubated, but if her heart stopped again, then no CPR. All that went well. Then on Wednesday evening, my mom became very confused. On Thursday, Dawn said she was even more confused and hallucinating, so I made the drive to Abilene. I spoke with the doctors and the nurses; they really didn't have anything else they could do, and I'm not okay with her suffering. She may not be in pain, but she's struggling to breathe, and that causes her to panic. So, Dawn and I made the decision to put her in Hendricks hospice. When we were talking with the hospice nurse, my mom said, "I just want to be comfortable for a few days, then I'll go bye-bye." :( She can't come home because she's at 15 liters of oxygen at 100%, and there are no home machines able to handle that. She wants to go home, but I've explained to her that she wouldn't make it to the car, let alone home. She's still with us, but totally out of it. With everything that has happened this year, my sisters and I will need some help with her cremation. I know it's that time of year and this economy isn't the best, but every little bit will help. If you feel led and if you can help, we would greatly appreciate it.
Our mom has been a wonderful mom! She always made sure that my sisters and I had everything we ever needed, but the things I love most about her are that we were loved beyond measure and supported without judgment but instead with encouragement. Now it's our turn to make sure her final wishes are granted.
Thank you!
