We are POA: an Italian non-profit organisation that designs for innovation and sustainability in vulnerable contexts.

Currently, we are on site building a toilet block for the primary school in Themi District, Arusha (Tanzania).

The project embraces sustainable construction techniques by using Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB)—a locally sourced, low-carbon alternative that aligns with traditional building methods while reducing environmental impact. To meet government construction standards for schools we are using concrete for the main structure and a timber roof.

This project addresses the challenges of WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) in Themi School by constructing sustainable facilities. It contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), helping to create a healthier, more equitable learning environment for all students.

We’ve already begun work on the foundations and main structure, but we still have a long way to go to complete the building and provide the school with the toilet facilities every child deserves.

Siamo POA: una organizzazione no profit in Italia che si occupa di progettazione sostenibile e innovativa in contesti fragili e vulnerabili.

Al momento abbiamo iniziato un cantiere per la costruzione di un blocco bagni per la scuola elementare nel Distretto di Themi, ad Arusha (Tanzania).

Il progetto utilizza i CSEB (mattoni in terra cruda compressi) come principale tecnica costruttiva sostenibile; una risorsa locale e con basso impatto ambientale che prende ispirazione da tecniche di costruzione tradizionali. La struttura portante e’ in calcestruzzo armato e la copertura in legno, seguendo le norme edilizie del governo per costruzioni pubbliche.

Questo progetto affronta le sfide relative a WASH (Acqua, Servizi Igienici e Igiene) presso la scuola di Themi contribuendo agli SDG 4 (Quality Education) e SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), aiutando a creare un ambiente di apprendimento più sano ed equo per tutti gli studenti.

Abbiamo già iniziato i lavori per le fondazioni e la struttura principale, ma abbiamo ancora molta strada da fare per completare la costruzione dell'edificio e dotare la scuola delle adeguate strutture igieniche che ogni studente merita.
