Creating a Beautiful Urban Garden with Iman

Garden Updates

Hello everyone and thank you for visiting the site! I just wanted to share some updates at the garden. This spring and summer season we got so much done to prepare the property for its future in abundance. Including clearing the untamed jungle and tilling a section to cultivate veggies. We are looking forward to fencing in the veggie area and having an arborist remove some larger trees this winter. We will continue soil remediation with a new patch of sunflowers this coming season and will be planting some fruit trees. We also have welcomed 20 be hives to the property! This is all possible because of the donations gathered right here. I am overflowing with gratitude and awe at the outreach from all of you. I must say all the encouraging words and delight sparked through this project have me floored. Thank you everyone who has chosen to collaborate with me on this project! Thank you all for choosing the beauty of nature.
sincerely,
Iman

Iman is truly one of the most committed, kind, visionary, humble, hardworking, and inclusive farmers. She is creating a farm in Detroit that will be a beautiful, healing space with abundant food, herbs, learning experiences, and authentic connections with neighbors.

Iman’s Story
Farming has been an important part of Iman’s life for over 20 years. It began with excitement and curiosity as a child and became a way of life. With experience in horse farming, large-scale organic farms, and landscaping, she went onto spending twelve years in a communal living project. The acre of land was home to a large variety of vegetables, mushrooms and a small orchard as well as chickens, turkeys, goats and bees too! Finding a wholesome balance is important and was one of the driving reasons for her to move to Detroit. Her desire to grow food within a city environment for her neighbors and to find others to collaborate with is strong. Frankly, it’s inspiring as she has already influenced many into starting their own gardens and sharing from the land.

Iman's Dream
Iman was awarded a $2k grant from the Detroit Black Farmer Fund to help purchase land on the EastSide of Detroit in 2020. Next summer, she will begin creating a sustainable, organic farm on these 8-lots as she renovates the nearby farmhouse. The farm will grow food that is accessible to her East Side neighbors. It will be a welcoming place of beauty and reprieve for neighbors as well as an open space to support them in their own food projects and share in hands-on learning.

She is hoping to allow the property to develop alongside the needs and desires of the community. This includes what is grown. She hopes to create a welcoming space where folks can interact with beautiful plants, a place for reprieve, a place to be amongst the colors and scents of nature. It is her expectation that as these grassy lots are transformed community interest will peak. She aims to keep this property open as a place to aid community neighbors with their own projects. And as a place for hands-on learning as those desires arise in the people who visit.

Please join us in supporting an inspiring black farmer in her land and home ownership journey. Any amount you are able to give will be deeply helpful in restoring the farmhouse and cultivating this space of beauty, healing, and meaningful exchange.
