This October I'm driving a second-hand ambulance from Munich to Kyiv, in a convoy of more than 50, and handing it over in person to the crew who will use it.
The vehicles can't be shipped. Each one has to be driven across four countries by a volunteer. That's what the Ukraine Focus Volunteer Ambulance Corps is — an idea modelled on the American Field Service of the First World War, and one that has now delivered nearly 400 emergency response vehicles to Ukraine's Territorial Defence Forces, 62 of them this year alone.
The TDF is a volunteer force, and less well equipped than the regular army. The ambulance works as a mobile trauma unit for wounded civilians and soldiers.
I'm going out five days early to help move vehicles from Frankfurt to the Munich start line, then driving the convoy route through Czechia and Poland into Ukraine.
This isn't new for me. I've supported Ukraine since 2022 — donations, and work with the Superhumans centre near Lviv, which provides prosthetics and rehabilitation to people injured in the war.
I'm paying my own flights, fuel and hotels. Every euro donated buys the vehicle, not the journey.
An ambulance costs €7,500 to €12,000. That's what I'm raising for. Everything given here goes directly to Ukraine Focus, a US 501(c)(3), for this mission — it does not pass through me.
There is a second page for donors in the United States, where gifts are tax-deductible.
If you can't give, sharing this helps just as much.
