Femicide is the killing of a woman or girl by a man because of her gender. This issue is rampant in Nigeria and to address it, we are creating ;
Healing Haven for Living Victims of Femicide.
The living victims/survivors of femicide are the children orphaned by this act and the families left behind by the killing of women and girls.
After femicide, the world moves on.
But living victims don’t.
Violence doesn’t end with death.
It lives on in those left behind.
These children carry trauma & the families lose livelihoods.
Justice takes years.
This is why we at DOHS Cares are building Healing Haven. A place for healing, safety, and recovery.
Imagine being left behind, by a loved one due to femicide, struggling to cope with the trauma and mental health impacts. In Nigeria, children, siblings, and parents of GBV/ femicide victims struggle with deep psychological trauma and social isolation long after the violence occurs.
DOHS Cares Foundation is launching Healing Haven, a trauma healing center dedicated to supporting survivors of femicide and GBV, especially women and children who have nowhere else to turn.
In 2024, we tracked over 150 cases of femicide in Nigeria.
In 2025, we tracked over 200 victims.
In just two years, we have tracked over 350 victims of femicide in Nigeria.
Behind each case are lives permanently altered:
● Children who witnessed these violence suffering anxiety, migraines, and trauma.
● Families losing income due to prolonged legal trials in court and trauma.
● Siblings unable to function emotionally or professionally.
● Survivors separated from loved ones due to unsafe living conditions.
These impacts are rarely addressed by existing systems in Nigeria.
Our Solution: Healing Haven
Healing Haven will be a safe, trauma-informed sanctuary providing holistic care and long-term recovery support. It will protect survivors as they pursue justice, free from external influences persuading them from speaking up.
The center will offer:
1. Therapy: Professional trauma counseling and psychotherapy
2. Healing Circles for living victims of femicide (Mental health services for women and children left behind by an act of femicide)
3. Temporary safe accommodation for SGBV survivors and their children
4. Life skills training and economic empowerment programs
5. Peer support groups and community healing initiatives
Survivor Impact Stories
Over the past two years, we have responded to numerous cases arising in the aftermath of femicide;
➢ A Victim’s sibling refusing to care for their hair for 2 years, holding on till they get justice for their sister.
➢ A child turning violent amongst peers after witnessing what happened to her mother.
➢ Children battling migraines and nightmares after witnessing violence.
➢ Children separated from their siblings due to loss of both parents in a femicide suicide case or due to the father (perpetrator being in prison)
➢ Families losing everything to pursue legal cases
➢ Children being used to influence cases especially when the father is the perpetrator.
➢ A Mother experiencing a mental break down after her children’s abuse ordeal.
In a world where hope and justice seem lost, living victims and survivors need a safe place to step away, heal, and halt the cycle of violence.
Survivors need more than sympathy. They need healing.
