I am a 74-year-old transgender woman, Navy Vietnam veteran, retired senior computer scientist, and author of four books. I transitioned in 1991, before the word 'transgender' even existed. Over the years, I have grown increasingly frustrated by the lies and half-truths being spread about transgender kids. That’s why I created a TED-type multimedia report—one that weaves together scientific research from reputable sources and my own personal journey growing up transgender. My goal is to help people truly understand what it means to be transgender, and to show the real consequences of denying trans kids the medical and psychiatric care they need.
I have already given five of these talks around my home state to great acclaim, and now I wish to take this message around the country. Through my presentations, I want to dispel the mis- and dis-information that so often clouds this conversation. By sharing both the facts and my lived experience, I hope to inspire empathy and understanding in communities across the country. The funds raised here will help cover my travel to and from venues, speaking costs, and the creation of a website to reach even more people. I’ll also use some of the funds for advertising, so that my message can reach those who need to hear it most. I need funds right now so I can attend the Advocates for Transgender Equality dinner in Washington DC in April and spread the word about the important work I'm doing.
Your support means the world to me. With your help, I can continue this important work—educating, advocating, and standing up for transgender youth who deserve compassion and care. Thank you for believing in this mission and for helping me make a difference.
