My name is Sheila Wall. Five years ago I donated a kidney to my kid brother Tom Laughron. He was born with one kidney, and as an adult, a family history of diabetes took a toll on that kidney. Current day, he lost his right leg to that hideous disease in August. Through all of this, he has been a warrior, and is the strongest person I know; never giving up the fight because he knows how precious life is. He keeps showing up, ready to tackle whatever it is he has to do to survive. However, with that said, this has been a life changer. Even though he has medical insurance through his job, it only covers a percentage, and his out of pocket costs are astounding. There are day to day costs also that are not covered. He had to revamp his home by taking out carpets, putting in wood flooring, and building ramps for stairs throughout. He had to buy a van to accommodate his wheelchair so he can continue to work to keep his health insurance. Currently he is in the process of being fitted for a prosthetic. The vendor he’s selected is in Southern California. The prosthetic is covered, but the travel and stay there is not. He will need to be there for one week just for the fitting, any adjustments, etc. He’s a proud man and wouldn’t ask for help, we weren’t raised that way, but as a sister, I know this is bigger than our family can handle right now financially. We want to see him succeed and adjust to a normal life, albeit a new life, so a new normal life. He’s been a huge BMX bikelife rider for years. For those that know him know that he has arranged organized bike rides in a variety of cities. We all want to see him back on a bike and riding like he used too. Any amount you can donate would be appreciated to help support his recovery and to literally help him get back on his feet and keep moving forward.
