Our Story
I'm reaching out on behalf of Thor, my son's father, who is facing a serious health crisis that requires immediate action and community support.
Thor is a man who has lived life to the fullest and touched countless lives along the way. Growing up splitting his time between Alaska and Montana, he learned the value of hard work on his uncle's farm, developing the strong work ethic and generous spirit that would define him. As a talented hockey player in his youth, he brought passion and dedication to the ice, embodying the competitive spirit that would carry him through all aspects of his life.
His love for the mountains led him to Crested Butte, Colorado, where he became a skilled snowboard instructor, sharing his expertise and love of the outdoors with others. But it's his craftsmanship as a woodworker that truly showcases his artistry – Thor has been celebrated for his incredible talent, creating beautiful pieces that reflect both skill and heart.
Throughout his life, Thor has been the person others turn to when they need help. Big-hearted and generous to a fault, he's never hesitated to lend a hand to anyone in need. He's been a devoted father to his 15-year-old son, a loving brother, and a caring son to his parents. His colorful, rich life has been defined by the relationships he's built and the people he's helped along the way.
Now, at 58, Thor is facing a serious health crisis that began in October with a colon cancer diagnosis. The surgery and ongoing treatment have significantly impacted his ability to work and maintain his independence. As he works toward getting healthy enough for his final surgery, he needs support during this challenging recovery period.
The Current Situation
Thor has recently been discharged from the hospital, and we've successfully sold his house. While we're grateful to have completed the sale, we received less than anticipated, leaving us enough proceeds to support his transition for a few months at best. Now we're facing a new challenge: finding suitable housing for someone with poor credit and no current income while we work to get him enrolled in SSI and other support services.
The immediate challenges we're facing include:
- Finding housing that will accept someone with credit challenges and no current income
- Covering security deposits and first/last month's rent requirements
- Bridging the gap while we navigate the SSI application process
- Ensuring he has stable housing during his ongoing medical recovery
- Covering daily living expenses until his benefits are approved
Why We Need Your Help
While the house sale provided some resources, the funds we received need to stretch until Thor can access disability benefits and other support services – a process that can take many months. The funds will help with:
- Housing deposits and rent for someone with credit challenges
- Extended living expenses during the SSI application waiting period
- Additional medical care not covered by existing insurance
- Legal and administrative fees for disability applications and other services
- Emergency buffer for unexpected costs during this transition
Our Goal
Our goal is to help Thor secure stable housing and bridge the financial gap until he can access the benefits and services he needs . This is about giving someone who has always been fiercely independent the support he needs while navigating a complex system during his recovery.
How You Can Help
Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a real difference. We're also grateful for shares and any other support you can offer. This is about supporting someone who has always been there for others during a challenging time in his recovery.
Thank you for taking the time to read Thor's story and for any support you can provide during this transition.
