At Therapy Project California (TPC), we believe that every person deserves the opportunity to heal, no matter their past. Since our founding, we’ve provided free teletherapy to current and former foster youth in California. Our volunteer therapists donate their time and expertise to help these young adults face the trauma they’ve experienced and build brighter futures. But we need your help to keep this critical service running.
What is Therapy Project California?
TPC provides FREE teletherapy to foster youth who need emotional and psychological support. With teletherapy, our clients—who may often face housing instability—are able to keep their same therapist even when they move. This continuity of care is crucial, as it helps them avoid the retraumatizing experience of repeatedly telling their story to a new therapist each time they move.
Additionally, teletherapy offers accessibility to therapy services regardless of insurance status, making it a valuable resource for individuals who may not have consistent or comprehensive coverage. Many people face long wait times when trying to connect with a therapist, but through teletherapy, our clients can bypass these delays and start receiving the support they need sooner. Access to therapy is vital for emotional well-being, and by offering a more flexible, timely, and consistent service, TPC helps ensure that foster youth get the care they deserve without unnecessary barriers.
We can offer these services completely free of charge, thanks to the generosity of volunteers who donate their time to make a difference. The result? A safe, consistent environment for healing, where our clients can focus on their mental well-being rather than worrying about paying for therapy.
Why This Matters:
Free, Accessible Therapy: No cost to the client means one less barrier to getting the help they need. Many of our clients struggle financially after leaving foster care, and paying for therapy can seem impossible. We want to ensure that cost isn’t an obstacle to getting help.
Teletherapy: Teletherapy makes it easier for clients to maintain their therapeutic relationships despite frequent moves between foster homes or housing instability. They don’t have to relive their trauma by starting over with a new therapist each time they relocate.
Volunteerism: The volunteer therapists who make this possible are the heart of our program. Their commitment to supporting these young adults—many of whom have experienced neglect, abuse, or abandonment—provides invaluable mental health support that can make a huge difference in their lives.
The Impact So Far:
Since launching in 2020, we’ve:
- Served 185 clients, with a total of 3,097 teletherapy sessions.
- Provided therapy for current and former foster youth, most of whom are aged 18 and older.
- Engaged 78 volunteer therapists (licensed professionals, associates, and trainees) who have offered their time and expertise.
However, the need continues to grow, and so do the costs associated with managing this project.
How Your Donation Will Help:
Your contribution will directly support the continuation of this vital service. The funds we raise will go towards:
- Expanding our outreach to recruit more volunteer therapists and serve more clients in need.
- Supporting our admin process, which is currently handled manually by a small team.
- Ensuring that teletherapy remains accessible and of the highest quality for our clients.
Each dollar you contribute helps provide stability and healing for young adults who need it the most.
Client Testimonials:
"The assurance that I’m worth having a therapist provide me with services
even though I can’t afford it is a big one. I also love the comfort,
encouragement, and assistance I get from everyone, especially my
therapist. I still have a part of my brain that says “you’re not worth it, and
undeserving of being in the program” but my therapist is helping me with
that too. :) " — A former foster youth client with TPC
"The therapist I was matched up with is a really good match. I was having a hard
time in the past to find a therapist where I felt comfortable with and would help
me through my past traumas. My current therapist allows me to talk about
anything and everything. I feel very comfortable with Whitney and I'm really glad I
was able to finally find a therapist." — A former foster youth client with TPC
Therapist Testimonials:
“I love working to help foster kids who would otherwise fall through the cracks of the system. The supervision group has been a godsend to help therapists provide the best care possible for them. Thank you for helping us make a difference for the kids in foster care.” — Jessica, Volunteer therapist with TPC
“This project is changing the narrative of loss, disrupted attachment, and inconsistent care that far too many youth in foster care experience. The new narrative it creates is one of healing, connection, and continuity of care. I am so honored to be part of this profoundly impactful program.” — Caitlin, Volunteer therapist with TPC
