Hi, I’m Chris Mead.
We're creating a community theatre experience called No Place Like Home — a magical, interactive performance made with and for patrons of Dementia Friendly Connect Café in Ulverstone, Tasmania.
What Is No Place Like Home?
It’s a reimagining of The Wizard of Oz — but instead of Kansas, a young girl and her dog are swept away by the Roaring Forties to the whimsical Land of Tas.
This isn’t just a show — it’s a co-created, inclusive theatre experience shaped by real stories from the Connect Café community. They’ve already said yes to being involved — contributing to the script and joining as a participating audience on the day of the performance.
Why I’m Fundraising
I applied for funding to pay the artists who will write, compose, rehearse, and perform this show — but due to a high demand of applicants, we just missed out and the grant was unsuccessful.
I’ve committed to making it happen anyway.
I’m donating my time to:
- Collect and weave real stories into the script
- Manage the project
- Work with the dementia friendly community and our wonderful local council (who are generously providing the venue, catering, and promotion)
But we still need funds to pay our artists — its imperative that we value the artists professional work and pay appropriate rates.
Where Your Donation Will Go
Every dollar will directly fund:
- Artist fees for scriptwriting, musical direction, rehearsals, and performance.
- Fees are for David Starnes - 88-year-old professional singer on film, Alex Scott Fairley - scriptwriter/performer, Bradley Von Rock - musical director/event production, Molly O'Brien - singer/musician, Jarrod Connelly - singer
Why This Matters Now
This is more than a performance — it’s also an opportunity for international connection.
Liv Hunt, a UK-based theatre maker and Winston Churchill Fellow, is currently spending time with leading arts organisations in Japan and Australia — and she’s chosen to visit my work.
Her involvement in collaborating with us is an incredible honour and a chance for learning for all artists involved.
But we need to align with her travel dates — which means we need to perform on the date of Tuesday May 20th.
How You Can Help
Your donation will:
- Support artists who make community storytelling possible
- Bring inclusive, high-quality theatre to people who rarely get to experience this opportunity
Help us create something magical, and meaningful for the Dementia Friendly Connect Café community

Thank You
Thank you for valuing community, creativity, and compassion.
With your support, we can prove that there really is No Place Like Home — and that everyone deserves a seat in the theatre.
Warm regards,
Chris
